Huntington Beach, CA is renowned for it’s surfing, including the US Open of Surfing, every summer. However, you don’t have to wait for the big contests to get some cool action shots of the surfing. In fact, nearly any day, if there is decent surf, you can shoot without jockeying for position like you may have to do when the big crowds are out. You can shoot surfing from the beach or from up on the Huntington Beach pier. From the beach, you’ll need a little longer effective focal length than you will need from on the pier. In the following examples, I shot with a 1.5 crop factor camera and an 80-200 mm lens, so my maximum effective focal length was 300mm. You won’t need a really fast lens. All of these images where captured at f5.6 and 1/1600. ISO was 200. Exposures where Manual and WB was set to Daylight.
All shots where taken between about 10:30 and 11:30AM. Air temperature was 79 degrees (F) and the water was 59 degrees — not a bad day in Huntington Beach, and a great day for surfing.
